Abstract:

Photographs from Medsger's project files for an intended publication titled "I don't just cope, I live", that documented the activities of disabled activists Mark O'Brien, Tarri Tanaka, Judy Heumann, Don Scanlon, Denise Vancil and Vince Rios. Also includes typescript drafts of captions intended to accompany particular images for this project, transcribed from interviews conducted by Medsger. Other material includes photographs and release forms pertaining to publication "What do you do if your wheelchair gets a flat tire?", a 1978 educational textbook on children with disabilities, authored by Douglas Biklen and Michele Sokoloff -- and other photographs of disabled children. Identified subjects of smaller files include Paul Bendix, Donald Berry, wheelchair basketball, disabled college students and Draper wedding

Mark O'Brien (1949-1999), advocate for disabled persons; poet and journalist; contracted polio in 1955 and used iron lung for most of the remainder of his life; attended Graduate School of Journalism at University of California, Berkeley. Judith Heumann (b. 1947) international civil rights advocate for people with disabilities; acquired polio in early childhood. Tarri Tanaka (1952-2002), equestrian; founder of Cornerstone Equestrian Center for therapeutic horseback riding in American Canyon, Calif. Donald Scanlon (1930-2013), physician; graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1955; bicycle accident in 1976 left him a quadriplegic. Vincent Rios (b. 1945), advocate of disabled U.S. war veterans; in 1969 lost legs and arm in combat while serving in Vietnam War. Denise Vancil (b. 1967?), dancer and visual rehabilitation therapist; lost sight at age 13.
